What is Acupuncture?

Although most of us have heard of acupuncture,  we still have many questions about this 2000-year-old practice and since it is not a primary medicine system in our culture in the United States, we may have a hard time understanding the way acupuncture is commonly explained. This amazing and whole Health System was created through observation of nature’s cycles and the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). Acupuncture is based on the idea that our bodies mirror the environment. Ancient practitioners observed that touching certain areas of the body affected other parts, leading to the discovery of points that influence specific organs. Through this observation and discovering strategic points, they applied needles – back then, they used bone, then later steel – in the body. They could then manipulate the imbalances, thus bringing the body back into balance. Today, advancements in neuroscience are helping us understand the science behind acupuncture.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture utilizes the body’s nervous system to promote healing and balance. Nerves conduct communication throughout the body, constantly adapting to internal and external changes. To survive, the body may bypass diseased areas, leading to pain, organ issues, and disease over time. Acupuncture and herbs can help by reminding the nervous system how to function correctly, removing blockages and restoring balance. Importantly, acupuncture treats the body, mind, and spirit as a whole, addressing physical and emotional symptoms to provide holistic healing. Acupuncture FAQ

  • What conditions can acupuncture help with? Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief, stress and anxiety, digestive issues, headache, migraine, insomnia, hormonal balances, fertility support, and more. It is helpful for overall wellness and nervous system regulation.
  • Does acupuncture hurt? Most people find acupuncture to be very gentle. The needles are extremely thin. You may feel a slight pinch  or sensation as the needle is inserted, but many people find the treatment to be relaxing and even fall asleep during sessions.
  • How many sessions will I need? This depends on your condition and your goals. Acute issues may resolve in a few sessions, while chronic or long-term imbalances typically require a longer course of treatment. Your practitioner will create a plan tailored to your needs.
  • Do you take insurance? We do not bill insurance directly. However, you can contact your insurance provider to find out if your specific plan covers acupuncture. If it does – we are happy to provide you with  a superbill – a detailed receipt that includes the necessary billing and diagnosis codes. You will pay the full session cost at checkout, and then you can submit the superbill to your provider for their reimbursement. Please note reimbursement from your provider will depend entirely on your individual plan. Payment with Balanced You Clinic is due in full at time of services.
  • Is there a more affordable option? We offer open room acupuncture 4 days a week during specific time slots. Open room is a cost effective option provided in a shared space. Sessions are available on a sliding scale. For more information click here.
