Moxa Heat Therapy

Moxibustion, a therapeutic technique deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and often used in conjunction with acupuncture, involves the burning of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near or over specific acupoints on the body. This practice is believed to stimulate the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood within the body’s meridian system, promoting overall health and well-being. Moxibustion is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing conditions associated with “cold” or “deficient” Qi, such as fatigue, chronic pain, digestive issues, and certain gynecological disorders.

The traditional method of moxibustion involves igniting a moxa stick, a tightly rolled bundle of mugwort, and holding it close to the skin. The radiant heat generated by the burning moxa is thought to penetrate the acupoints, invigorating the body’s energy pathways. While moxibustion is generally considered safe and effective, the smoke produced during the burning of mugwort can be a concern for some individuals, particularly those with respiratory conditions, allergies, or sensitivities to smoke.

To address this concern and ensure that all patients can benefit from the therapeutic effects of moxibustion, we offer a smoke-free alternative: moxa balm. Moxa balm is a topical preparation infused with the essence of mugwort. It is applied to the desired acupoints and then gently warmed using a heat lamp or other heat source. This method delivers the same warmth and stimulation as traditional moxibustion without the smoke, making it a suitable option for a wider range of patients.

Both traditional moxibustion and moxa balm are valuable tools for enhancing health and well-being. Our practitioners will work with you to determine which method is most appropriate for your individual needs and preferences
